August 17 2023 / Letter 408 |
This is a special letter for those of you who are in Paris in August, for those who want to find some pure and fresh air not too far away, but for those who also have time to wander in the streets or go to see exhibitions… Hum, it’s not so bad after all to be a Parisian in August. |

If you are in Paris, the weather’s hot and you’d rather be in the countryside, here is a hidden place so aptly named : L’auberge du bonheur. It is located in the Bois de Boulogne, just behind the better-known Grande Cascade. I really like its Norman feel and its outdoor tables under parasols in a Renoir atmosphere (the painter or the filmmaker, as you prefer…). You may already know the place, but we don’t necessarily think about it. You can call them at 01.42.24.10.17, but they don’t take reservations.

On my way there I saw this cute little vintage Fiat 500… Why do car manufacturers make such ugly cars now ? Well, that was my little reactionary phrase of the week…
|
 |
Pretty pretty, right ? |
 |
Like a toy ! |

This is a place I haven’t visited yet, but as you’re in Paris in August, I thought it would be nice to tell you about it. This is Hangar Y à Meudon. in Meudon. My friend Claire told me about it and knowing her tastes and requirements, I trust her completely. This hangar is an incredible place in the middle of the forest of Meudon built in 1879, it served during the First World War as a workshop for the construction of captive balloons, then until 1973, it hosted the Air and Space Museum. But in 1981, Hangar Y closed its doors only to officially open them again last spring. Today it is a magnificent exhibition space (listed as a historical monument in 2000) housed in an incredible park where we come across works by Boltanski, Sarah Lucas and Kiki Smith. Hangar Y offers a reconstruction of the place that you can explore using a virtual reality headset as you walk along. There is also a restaurant, the Perchoir Y which looks very pretty and a guinguette. And plenty of workshops, conferences that are organised, play areas for children, picnic tables and a very nice bookstore. I don’t know about you, but it really, really makes me want to go there !

New obsession : why store fronts are ugly today when it’s so easy to make them look pretty ? Well, OK, that’s again a bit reactionary, but we agree, right ?! If you like it, you can send me photos of pretty storefronts seen during your vacation (in square format) in Paris or elsewhere and I will put them in future letters, maybe this will give some people good ideas ?

That’s it, quite simply ! |

OK, you’ve probably heard of it, and maybe already seen it, but the exhibition Basquiat x Warhol, à quatre mains is absolutely breathtaking and it ends on August 28th … so if you are in Paris, go for it ! On the way there, I thought : ‘How lucky that Bébert Arnault sells so many handbags and was able to make this Fondation Louis Vuitton ! ». While walking through the exhibition, I heard a little girl say to her mother that she could do the same, no, Miss, I don’t think so … but in her mother’s place, I would have told her: ‘Maybe you can try later when you get home’, because after all, what is better than exhibitions that make you want to do things and Basquiat is certainly the perfect artist for an initiation to art. So Anne, as an exemplary grandmother, here is the perfect program for you ! What’s more, when you get out, you can take all your descendants to theJardin d’Acclimatation that my children used to call judiciously, the Jardin d’Alimentation. Ah Bébert, he has a sense of good things !

Well, I admit it, I didn’t know much about Sarah Bernhardt … the actress, the Aiglon, the wooden leg … well, obviously she was much more than that ! An international star, a sculptor, a designer, a great extravagant, a director, a decorator, an actress, loving both men and women, with immense freedom and whose motto was ‘all the same’. Well chosen ! Thanks to la the magnificent exhibition at the Petit Palais, you will also inevitably be fascinated by this flamboyant muse. Her portraits, self-portraits, films about her, photographs, a thousand things that make you want to know a little more. The exhibition is also original because the furniture and plants of the time are on display immersing you into this creative atmosphere and… I’m looking for a superlative, in the meantime, go ahead because it ends on August 27 !

Next week, I’ll take you to a very beautiful museum that you don’t necessarily think of located 1.5 hours by train from Paris. A round trip in the day and it feels like you’ve gone on vacation! Can’t wait for next Thursday !
