All men seem to be fond of boxing, but women are too, starting with me ! It’s actually much more fun than aerobics, you don’t get bored and you really feel like you’re exercising. So to convince you (in case you aren’t already), I called on my friend Rudy and here is, in a few words and lots of images, a glimpse of our session.

Rudy Gernez... His kindness, attention to others and career make him an exceptional person. He started boxing when he was an altar boy in Montmartre (I told you, he’s exceptional) and never stopped. He likes to say that boxing saved his life, which has not always been easy. He is a professional boxer, today number 6 in French boxing and a qualified trainer. But what’s great about Rudy is that when he arrives at your house to give you a lesson, well, you’re happy to see him, and that’s not bad especially when you know he’s there for you to do sports... And then, Rudy listens, he tries to find out what you need, your desires, your expectations and what exercises suit you best. He works with children, adults and athletes or not (I’m living proof), companies, actors/actresses and people aged 98 (or over !) In short, Rudy adapts to everyone with immense professionalism and is convinced (and I am convinced too) that boxing is accessible to everyone. I’ll spare you all the different boxes that Rudy can teach, but he knows his job. He can also teach self-defence sports or simply physical preparation classes. Another great advantage is that Rudy comes to your home for a one-to-one a small group session. But if you’ve got lots of friends who also want to take a class, then Rudy will take care of finding a room. As you can see, it’s very hard to find a good excuse not to try a class with Rudy at least once ! |

So here is an overview of my lesson for the day. We started by putting on the gloves. It’s a pretty satisfying step, I must say. What’s more, with the gloves on, you know pretty quickly from the sound you’re making if you’ve punched correctly or not, it’s useful ! We’ve been working on the right positions and that’s sport enough !

Obviously, if the arms work hard, so do the legs and that also means flexibility and all that... And then, once you’ve understood (or at least tried) the position of the legs and arms, you have to coordinate everything, and that is far from easy. In any case, I guarantee that you instantly forget all your daily worries and only think about doing the right thing, and a little about your next-day aches and pains... |

If there are three things we do care about, it’s our arms, bum and belly... So, of course, Rudy knows exactly how to reassure us. For my arms, for example, he had me do exercises with a médecine ball, some kind of weighted soft ball that’s much more fun than dumbbells. You reproduce boxing movements to work on the back of the arm and reshape it. Bye-bye, dangling arm ! |

Another accessory : the TRX, a kind of elastic resistance bands that you can wedge into the doorframe, for example. And it’s good for your thighs, bum, abs, back, arms ... in short, it’s your new best friend. Of course, Rudy showed me all kinds of exercises which indeed seemed very effective, given the stretching sensations I felt (in other words, I was sore all over !) |

And then, we moved on doing all kinds of floor exercises to strengthen the stomach and buttocks. It was really great, even if sometimes I felt like crying out in pain. But Rudy always finds the right words to encourage you. He can give you advice on diet too. But believe me, after an hour of sport, you’ll swear without batting an eye that you’ll never eat sweets or bread again and will drink lots of water ! Yes, sport goes hand in hand with diet ! In any case, even if it’s February, no need to wait until June to prepare your summer silhouette. Besides, it’s still the best way to buy your swimsuit at Eres without feeling guilty ! |
